Push bikes

  • 4yrs old and younger

  • “push” bikes have no pedals

Push bike races on the second half of the track so that it is shorter and less difficult. We never use the large start hill.

These bikes can be modified ones with the pedals removed or purchased, there is no official requirement or regulations - this is just to get kiddies on the track and have them start enjoying the sport so that when they grow bigger and try it with a full pedal race bike, they are not as scared and get improving their racing skills faster.

20” BMX bikes

  • bmx race bikes with 20” diameter wheels

  • no front brakes

  • single gear

  • no reflectors, no wheel pegs, etc.

The 20” age class is the most common for kids and many adults. Classes are organized by bike size, age, and gender (ie. Challange Classes).

For elite, high caliber racers there are also Championship classes that are organized by bike size, ability, and gender - these class races are not normally run at local track races due to the limited number of these caliber of racers.

For smaller kids that want to race, but are not big enough to ride a 20” bike, they are allowed to use bikes with a 16 or 18” wheel size. They are just required to race in the 20” age class with other same-age kids that may be riding 20” bikes.

20”bike sizes

Bike sizes are determined primarily by the “length” of the bike frame as measured from the middle of the seat post to the middle of the headset. This is also referred to as the top-tube length.

8 most common BMX size types:

4'2" - 4'10 Mini 16" - 17.5"

Note that the toptube lengths may and do vary between different manufactures.

24” BMX bikes
(cruisers)

  • bmx race bikes with 24” diameter wheels

  • (everything else the same as 20”)

Many adults race on 24” cruiser race bikes with them being more comfortable a ride. Some kids also race 24” cruiser bikes mostly so that they can race more different classes in a race event.
